Supremacy of Christ over Work (Part 1) in Colossians 3:22-4:1
This is the third installment in a series in which Paul is teaching the church in Colossae that Christ’s supremacy over all things has practical out workings in our lives as way we engage in relationships with spouses, parents, children, bosses and subordinates so that Christians engage in relationships differently than the world around us does. The way we engage in relationships should bear witness to Christ’s Lordship over us and a growing love for those people with whom we are in relationships. So far in this series, we have looked at the marriage relationship, and the parent-child relationship, and now we come to work relationships.
We are going to take two weeks to address work relationships because we live in a community where work is one of our paramount concerns. In this week’s part 1, we will examine what Paul is saying about work in the literal 1st Century work context of slavery. In next week’s part 2, we will apply Paul’s teaching to our 21st Century work lives to see how the Gospel changes things.
